Day - Coastal - Offshore

Planning your trip with a good wind weather forecast is one of the most important aspects in cruising. Whether you are cruising around the coast or heading offshore, PredictWind will help make your passage safer, faster and more comfortable.
When the safety of the crew and boat is at stake, you will want the best marine forecast available.
Often local marine forecasts are conservative and report the expected maximum wind speed over a large region. With a PredictWind forecast map you can see the whole region, and know exactly where to expect the areas of high wind speed to help plan your passage.
Day Cruising
The Basic Package is great entry level package for those not venturing too far from home, but want the most accurate marine forecast available.
The graphs of wind speed and direction use the most accurate 1km resolution forecast, and although you cannot see the 1km resolution maps, you can view the general weather situation on the 8km resolution maps.
You can also access this information in text format on your mobile phone at no extra charge.
Coastal Cruising
The Standard Package is suited for coastal cruising, where you want to see how the wind weather pattern will vary over the whole area. How close are the strong wind areas? Where are the best places for anchorages and shelter? When are you likely to get favourable winds? You will be surprised at how viewing a forecast wind map will help you plan the trip with confidence.
Use the Free GRIB viewer to automatically upload the Predict Wind forecast onto the chart, and plot the yacht's position. To obtain the higher resolution GRIB files (8km and 1km resolution) you can upgrade to the Professional Package for 1-30 days as required.
You will have also have access to the Predictwind Mobile Service, so you can get the latest text forecast on your mobile phone at no extra charge if you don’t have access to your computer.
Offshore Cruising
PredictWind can provide 5 day forecasts using the PredictWind 60km resolution model. Whilst this marine weather forecast is no longer available at a higher resolution, you do have access to a model that is one of the best on the market. Due to the reduced dampening/smoothing in our weather model you will see weather features that are not picked up by other models. Often the PredictWind wind weather model will pickup severe sailing weather events before other weather models. In addition we use two data sources, to produce two alternative forecasts for comparison. The closer the wind forecasts, the more confidence you have in its accuracy, for your comfort and safety.
The PredictWind Standard Package is ideally suited for this application. Use the Free GRIB viewer to plot the boat on a chart, by automatically uploading PredictWind 60km GRIB files onto the chart and show your boat relative to the marine weather system. To obtain the higher resolution GRIB files (8km and 1km resolution) you can upgrade to the Professional Package for 1-30 days as required.
Whilst offshore, getting access to the internet is expensive with satellite communications, and file sizes are limited with SSB radio data services. PredictWind has two services available to help with this problem.
1) A GRIB email service where you can specify the forecast area, time interval, and length of the forecast to get a suitable sized GRIB file anywhere in the world. This can be useful on SSB or Satellite communication services.
2) A text wind and wave forecast can be emailed to you for any Lat/Long in the world. For users of the Iridium Satellite network, this can be received as a txt message with no communication charges. This feature will be available by the end of November.

" If there is one thing that is consistently on cruisers mind that would be weather. Most cruisers have their sources to obtain this but I have never seen one site so all encompassing as PredictWind. The speed and ease to extract different types of information from PredictWind ranks it well above any source I have ever used. My personal favorite is getting wind speed and direction hourly in text format. No more squinting at wind barbs with a magnifying glass! I have found it to be extremely accurate this year in Fiji and it has become a morning and afternoon ritual log in.
