Buoy Racing

Coastal yacht racing is often challenging when wanting to get an accurate wind forecast. Headlands, bays and islands can have a dramatic effect upon the large-scale weather pattern, which are difficult, if not impossible, to predict without a high resolution weather model. Offshore Yacht Racing
PredictWind can provide 5 day marine forecasts using the PredictWind 60km resolution model. Whilst this weather forecast is no longer at a higher resolution, you do have access to a model that is one of the best on the market. Due to the reduced dampening/smoothing in PredictWind’s weather model you will see wind weather features that are not picked up by other weather models. In addition we use two data sources for the weather model, to produce two alternative forecasts for comparison. The closer the wind forecasts, the more confidence you can have in the accuracy.
When making landfall you can then access the high resolution forecasts, to help formulate your race strategy for the start and end of the race – often the most critical parts of the race.

" With a college degree in meteorology and a long career racing sailboats, I appreciate the importance, and challenge in getting weather predictions that "work". The information is well presented and easily managed. Any meteorologist (or sailor for that matter) knows that weather models have their limitations and are never 100% accurate. But there is no question that they can provide valuable information that can help sailboat racers make a better decision out on the race course. "
