Laser World Championships 2009

The Laser World Championships began on the 20th of August and already the weather has played a huge part. The first day had perfect sailing conditions, but the second day had very shifty light winds. The day was reduced to just 1 race for each fleet and numerous recalls for sailors crossing the line early, resulting in 20 sailors being black flagged.

The early winds of Hurricane Bill hit on the 3rd day and the sailors had 2 races for each fleet in fresh 22 knot winds. Also the Jury came to the conclusion that the group with the early disqualifications from the previous day could re-sail the race.

Day 4 and Hurricane Bill hit with full force and winds in excess of 50 knots. The boats were derigged and stored inside the St. Margaret Sailing Clubhouse for the night.

Day 5 brought the opposite of the previous day, no wind! The boats were quickly unpacked and rigged up for racing, then proceeded to bob around the committee boat waiting for a sea breeze that never eventuated.
