How It Works
As soon as the unit has power, it automatically transmits your GPS position to the PredictWind servers every hour. Friends & family can view your track on a web page customised for your boat. This can even be inserted into your blog. If your boat stops or alters course friends will be alerted that you may need assistance.
Weather Routing Updates
Updates can be configured to be automatically sent to the Satellite Communicator as soon as the forecast is updated using PredictWind online weather routing. The boats position is automatically determined by the GPS boat tracking feature. Destination is set on the website, or via email. Weather updates include both PredictWind forecasts, the GFS (Global Forecast System used by many websites) and the CMC (Canadian Met Centre) forecast. In addition, 2 Swell forecasts and Real-time Ocean Current information is supplied.
You can send and receive regular email. There is no limitation to the length of the emails, but you cannot send and receive regular files.
Can be configured to email an alert if your boat is moved from your marina or mooring. This can reduce your insurance premiums.
Files can be manually requested via email to supplement the weather routing updates, to show the larger synoptic pattern if required. Most sailors rely mainly on the weather routing updates.
Worldwide Shipping US$130 Import taxes (if any) not included.
Note: Requires PredictWind Pro Subscription for automatic weather updates.

Solo Sailor around the Americas
I used PredictWind’s weather forecast for over 18,000 miles from the Northwest Passage in the Arctic to Cape Horn, and I have found their service to be accurate even in the most remote regions of our planet. I highly recommend PredictWind’s satellite communicator and you will not find me sailing without one.
First profoundly deaf person to sail the Atlantic single-handed
First deaf person to sail around the world solo
After I arrived back home from sailing around the world I can look back and say to myself how pleased I was with the PredictWind Satellite Communicator. Every morning and evening I opened my laptop to check the weather so that I could decide on the route I could take. It offered four different routes enabling me to make a decision about the course I would choose to match the angle of the wind. Using the communicator also offered me the opportunity to keep in touch with my family via email. I am so delighted with myself with my decision to purchase the PredictWind Satellite Communicator.
Is the Satellite Coverage Worldwide?
Yes, the unit is powered by Iridium the only satellite system with full global coverage. The largest customer of Iridium is the US Military which shows the level of reliability/coverage with Iridium.
Is the Satellite Communicator easy to install?
Yes, the unit is self-contained with a mounting bracket for rail mounting on your pushpit, and just requires 10-30 V power. The unit comes with a 12m power cable, and includes a wireless communication link using a Zigbee USB stick for PC/Mac. Software is included to receive email messages.
Can I use an iPad or Tablet?
No, the unit will only interface with a PC or Mac.
Can I receive GRIB files?
The Satellite Communicator can receive Wind and Pressure GRIB files to show a 3 day forecast. The time step is every 24hrs to minimise the data charges. Most users only use the weather routing updates only occasionally requiring a GRIB file to look at the large scale synoptic situation.
Why is there a charge for each Weather routing update?
Each weather update has a data communication charge on the Iridium network. There is no cost for the forecast itself as this is covered by the PredictWind subscription cost.
How do friend & family see my Boat's Track?
On a custom PredictWind web page that users can go to without any need to login. This page can be inserted into your blog or website.
What is a GPX FILE?
GPX is a standard format - it stands for GPS exchange. It allows you to transfer waypoints & routes between PC/Mac software & GPS units. However the most popular option for viewing the weather routing optimal route is Google Earth. Google Earth can be used in an offline mode without an internet connection.
Can I turn off Weather Routing updates?
Yes you can turn the weather routing updates off and on through the website, or via email. This limits the weather updates charges to when you are offshore and need the service.
How often are weather routing updates sent?
When activated the weather routing updates are sent automatically every 12hrs. Alternatively you can manually request the weather updates as required.
If I request a 3 day forecast versus a 9 day forecast does this affect the optimal routing?
No, The optimal route is still calculated to 9 days on the PredictWind server, and simply truncated at 3 days.
What is the cost of automatic weather routing update for a 7 day trip?
Most users select a 3 day forecast. This includes 4 wind forecasts, 2 swell forecasts, and ocean currents per update. The cost is U$2 per update, and updated every 12hrs. Therefore a total of 14 updates at US$2 for a total cost of US$28.
Can I set a new destination for the weather routing updates when offshore?
Yes the destination can be set on the website, or via email from the Satellite Communicator.
What is a KML file?
A KML file is a Google earth file that is emailed with the weather routing update. You will need to install Google earth on your PC/Mac so that the optimal route can be displayed on Google Earth. Please note Google Earth can be run in an offline mode.
How does the Satellite Communicator compare with a SSB Email Solution?
To use SSB Email service you require an SSB radio, a Pactor modem and an account with a service provider like SailMail (US$250 per year). The latest Pactor4 modem suitable for this service costs approximately US$1600. Assuming you already have a suitable SSB Radio, you will need to factor in at least US$500 for installation. The disadvantages are as follows;
Summary: The solution is not 100% reliable and power hungry. The advantage of this solution is there are no communication charges apart from the yearly US$250 SailMail charge.
Can the Satellite Communicator make a voice call?
No, The Satellite Communicator does not have a voice option. If you require voice we recommend purchasing a Satellite Phone such as the Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro (US$590) with a contract of $375 per year. Satellite phones are relatively cheap if used solely for voice, compared to data. In order to get a Satellite Phone to transfer data reliably you will need additional components such as an external active antennae, and complex email compression software. It is not a trivial task! Please see comparison table below for the best options to get a data on a Satellite connection.
