Bow Roller
January 16, 2025
A bow roller is a sheave or roller assembly fitted at the bow to guide an anchor, chain or rope rode over the stem during deployment and recovery. It keeps the anchor aligned, supports its weight when stowed, and helps prevent the rode from chafing gelcoat, topsides or deck fittings.
Properly matched bow rollers make anchoring faster and safer, especially in wind, tide or a crowded anchorage. The roller must suit the anchor shape, load path and bow geometry, working cleanly with the Anchor, the Anchor Chain, and the Anchor Windlass. Check for side loading, bent cheeks, worn pins and sharp edges before passages, as failure at the bow can quickly become a hull-damage or man-overboard risk.
A bow roller is part of the vessel’s ground tackle system, alongside shackles, swivels and chain stoppers. Before relying on it overnight or in exposed anchorages, use PredictWind forecasts, wave maps and tidal information to assess expected loads and whether the chosen anchorage will remain protected.
