Chainstopper

January 16, 2025

A chainstopper is a deck-mounted locking device that secures the anchor chain between the bow roller or hawsepipe and the windlass. It holds the chain under load, preventing accidental run-out and taking strain off the windlass once the anchor is set.

For boaters, a correctly sized and maintained chainstopper is a key part of safe anchoring. It protects the Anchor Windlass from shock loads, keeps the Anchor Chain controlled during retrieval or deployment, and improves the reliability of your Ground Tackle in gusty conditions or a rolly anchorage.

Before relying on a chainstopper, check the pawl, pin, devil’s claw or hook for wear, corrosion and correct engagement with the chain size. Forecast wind shifts, swell and tidal flow with PredictWind before anchoring, as rising loads can quickly expose weak deck fittings or poor chain alignment.
