Driving
February 27, 2025
Driving is the active handling of a vessel to keep it moving safely and efficiently on the intended course. In boating, it includes steering from the helm, controlling engine power or sail trim, managing speed, and making continuous corrections for wind, waves, current, traffic, and depth.
Good driving affects comfort, fuel use, crew safety, and the accuracy of navigation. A skipper must hold a steady Heading, understand how the Helm responds, and adjust for Sea State before the boat becomes overpowered, pounds into waves, broaches, or strays into hazards.
PredictWind forecasts help skippers choose conditions in which the boat can be driven without excessive load or risk. Wind, wave and current forecasts, plus Weather Routing and Departure Planning, support better speed choices, safer watchkeeping, and more efficient passages.
