GPS

GPS (Global Positioning System) is the satellite navigation system used aboard vessels to determine precise position, time, speed over ground and course over ground. In a maritime context, it feeds chartplotters, autopilots, instruments and safety systems with latitude and longitude so a crew can fix the boat’s position continuously, day or night and in poor visibility.
Accurate GPS data underpins safe coastal pilotage, offshore passage planning, race navigation and emergency response. It helps confirm your position against a Chartplotter, compare track and heading with a Compass, and monitor drift from Tidal Current or wind. It also supports accurate ETAs, waypoint navigation and search-and-rescue reporting.
In PredictWind, GPS position is central to routing and connectivity workflows. DataHub can use onboard NMEA GPS for GPS Tracking, AIS overlays and logged performance data, while the Offshore App uses your latest position to request relevant GRIB forecasts and weather routing at sea.
