Lumen

January 16, 2025

A lumen is the unit used to measure the total visible light output from a lamp or fixture on board. In maritime use, it helps describe how much usable light a deck floodlight, cabin lamp, cockpit light, torch, or navigation fixture produces, independent of beam shape or colour.

For boaters, lumen ratings guide safe night operations: enough light to move around the deck, identify gear, read instruments, and work at the helm without ruining night vision. Choosing suitable output is especially important around Navigation Lights, Illumination, and LED, where visibility, power draw, and reliability affect safety.

Lumens should be considered alongside candela, beam angle, colour temperature, and electrical load. A high-lumen deck light may be useful for anchoring or docking, but excessive glare can reduce situational awareness. PredictWind users planning overnight passages can combine sound lighting choices with forecast and routing tools to prepare for low-light watches.
