Manual Windlass

January 16, 2025

A manual windlass is a hand-operated anchoring device used to raise or lower an anchor and its rode without electric or hydraulic power. It typically uses a lever, crank, ratchet, gypsy or drum to multiply human effort, making heavy anchor recovery manageable on yachts, workboats and small commercial vessels.

For boaters, a manual windlass is valuable where simplicity, reliability and low power demand matter. Correct use reduces strain on crew, helps control the Anchor Chain or Anchor Rode, and supports safe deployment with the right Anchoring Scope. It is also a useful backup if electrical systems fail.

Manual systems are slower than powered units, so planning anchoring manoeuvres around wind, tide and available crew is important. PredictWind forecasts, wave maps and tidal information help you choose sheltered anchorages and avoid recovering gear in worsening conditions, especially during coastal cruising or remote passages.
