About Katakolo Port

Katakolo is a charming small port located in Pyrgos, the capital of Elia in the Southern Peloponnese. Despite its modest size, it plays a significant role in regional trade, having been established in 1857 for commercial purposes. The port is also the most popular gateway for travelers visiting the Ancient Olympia complex, which includes temples, priests’ dwellings, and public buildings. Olympia holds a special place in history as the birthplace of the Olympic idea during Mycenaean times. The first official quadrennial Olympic Games were held here in 776 BC and lasted five days, marking the start of a tradition that continues to this day.
