Cloud

February 27, 2025

A cloud is a visible mass of condensed water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere above the sea. In boating, cloud type, height, movement and development are practical weather clues, helping crews judge local instability, approaching fronts, squalls, rain bands and changes in visibility.

Clouds matter because they often show weather changing before instruments or forecasts are updated. Building cumulus can warn of squalls and Wind Gust, low stratus may reduce visibility and lead to Fog, while dark layered cloud can precede Rain. Reading these signs supports safer watchkeeping, reefing decisions, anchoring choices and passage timing.

PredictWind forecasts complement onboard observation with cloud, rain, wind and temperature maps, helping you compare what you see on deck with model guidance. For longer passages, Offshore App GRIB downloads let crews monitor developing systems and changing Cloud Cover even when away from mobile coverage.
