Hydraulic Windlass
January 16, 2025
A hydraulic windlass is an anchor-handling windlass powered by a vessel’s hydraulic system rather than by hand or a standalone electric motor. It uses hydraulic pressure to turn a gypsy, drum, or capstan, hauling in or veering chain and rope rode with high, steady torque.
For boaters, a hydraulic windlass reduces crew strain and improves control when recovering a heavy Anchor, especially on larger yachts, workboats, or vessels anchoring frequently. It must be matched to the Anchor Chain, vessel size, and Ground Tackle, with a chainstopper or snubber used so the windlass is not carrying the boat’s load at anchor.
Hydraulic systems are valued for continuous duty, corrosion-resistant installations, and reliable operation when maintained with clean fluid, sound hoses, and leak checks. Before choosing an anchorage, PredictWind forecasts, wave maps, and tidal tools help assess wind shifts, swell exposure, and holding conditions so anchor recovery remains safe and controlled.
