LNG Carrier

February 27, 2025

An LNG carrier is a specialised commercial ship built to transport liquefied natural gas at cryogenic temperature, typically in large insulated membrane or spherical tanks. In a navigation context, it is a very large, deep-draught vessel that operates mainly between offshore terminals, gas ports, and major shipping lanes.

For recreational and professional boaters, LNG carriers are important because they have limited manoeuvrability, long stopping distances, and may operate under port control with escort tugs or exclusion zones. Treat them as high-priority traffic, monitor AIS, assess CPA, and give early, predictable clearance, especially near channels, terminals, or traffic separation schemes. They are closely related to a Gas Carrier.

When passage planning near commercial ports, combine charted routes, local notices, tides, and forecast conditions. PredictWind’s forecasts, GRIB downloads, and Weather Routing can help time approaches, avoid adverse wind or sea state, and maintain safe separation from large vessel traffic.
