Weather Routing
June 9, 2025
Weather routing is the process of calculating the most suitable course for a vessel using marine forecasts, expected sea conditions, currents, and the boat’s performance characteristics. It goes beyond drawing a straight line between waypoints by modelling how the boat is likely to behave in changing wind and waves.
For boaters, weather routing supports safer passages, better comfort, and improved fuel or sail efficiency. It can identify favourable wind angles, avoid rough Sea State, account for GRIB forecast changes, and compare options before committing to a passage or Departure Planning window.
PredictWind Weather Routing uses multiple forecast models, wave data, currents, and your selected vessel performance model to generate route options with ETAs and conditions along each leg. Sailors can refine results using a Sail Polar, while power boaters can assess speed, comfort, and fuel implications.
