Primary Swell
February 27, 2025
Primary swell is the dominant swell train in a marine forecast: the wave system carrying the greatest energy, usually shown by its height, period and direction. It may be generated by distant storms or persistent winds and can arrive independently of the local wind.
For boaters, primary swell strongly affects comfort, speed and safety. A long-period swell may be manageable in deep water but hazardous near reefs, bars or shoaling coastlines, while swell on the bow can slow progress and increase fatigue. Compare its Wave Height, Swell Period and impact on overall Sea State before choosing a route or departure time.
Primary swell should be assessed alongside secondary swell, wind waves, currents and local bathymetry. PredictWind wave forecasts and Wave Maps help visualise swell direction and timing, supporting safer Weather Routing, Departure Planning and offshore GRIB downloads when internet access is limited.
