Sail Polar
February 27, 2025
A Sail Polar is a performance model showing the predicted boat speed of a sailing vessel at different wind speeds and wind angles. It is usually displayed as a polar chart or table, with boat speed plotted against true wind angle for a range of true wind speeds.
For boaters, a sail polar turns forecast wind into practical decisions: which course to steer, when to tack or gybe, and how fast the boat should realistically sail. Accurate polars improve Weather Routing, help compare progress against target speed, and support better choices around True Wind Angle and True Wind Speed.
In PredictWind, sail polars are used to calculate routes and estimated arrival times that match your vessel, rather than a generic yacht. DataHub can build an AI Polar from logged sailing data, helping cruisers and racers refine routing as real-world performance changes with sail setup, loading, and sea state.
