Vertical Windlass
January 16, 2025
A vertical windlass is an anchor-handling winch with its main shaft mounted vertically through the foredeck. The chainwheel or gypsy sits above deck to haul chain or rope rode, while the motor and gearbox are usually below deck, saving space and giving a clean, compact deck layout.
For boaters, the vertical design affects installation, locker depth, chain fall and safe anchoring technique. It must align cleanly with the Bow Roller, match the size of the Anchor Chain, and be backed up by a Chainstopper or cleat so the windlass is not carrying the vessel’s load at anchor.
Vertical windlasses are common on cruising yachts and powerboats where foredeck space is limited, but they need dry, accessible below-deck space for servicing. Before anchoring, use PredictWind forecasts and tidal tools to choose a sheltered spot with suitable holding, manageable wind shifts and favourable current.
