Wind Speed
February 27, 2025
Wind speed is the rate at which air moves across the water, expressed for mariners most often in knots. In a forecast it describes the expected average wind over a stated period or location, distinct from short-lived gusts, and it is a core input for sailing trim, powerboat handling, anchoring decisions and passage timing.
For boaters, wind speed determines whether to reef, change course, delay departure or seek shelter. It also shapes Sea State, affects leeway and fuel use, and must be read alongside Wind Direction and Wind Gust to judge comfort and risk on a route.
PredictWind displays wind speed in forecast maps, tables and GRIB downloads, including high-resolution models for coastal effects. Weather Routing uses these values with your vessel’s performance data to optimise routes, avoid strong-wind zones and identify more favourable departure windows.
