Trim Tabs
January 16, 2025
Trim tabs are adjustable plates fitted to the lower transom of many planing and semi-displacement powerboats. By deflecting water flow as the boat moves, they create lift at the stern and alter running attitude, helping set the bow angle and correct port-to-starboard list.
Correct trim improves visibility over the bow, reduces bow rise getting onto Planing speed and can lessen pounding in a steep Sea State. It also balances uneven crew, fuel or gear loading, improves steering control, and may reduce drag and Fuel Consumption. Excessive tab can bury the bow, so adjustments should be gradual.
Trim tabs work alongside hull design, engine trim and stabilisation systems, but they are adjusted by feel and conditions underway. Before a coastal run or offshore passage, PredictWind wind and wave forecasts help you anticipate when tab use may be needed for comfort, speed and safer handling.
