Wiper Arm

January 16, 2025

A wiper arm is the metal or composite arm that connects a marine windscreen wiper blade to its drive spindle, transferring motion from the wiper system across the wheelhouse or cockpit glass. On boats, it must resist salt, vibration, UV exposure and heavy spray while keeping the blade pressed evenly against the screen.

Clear forward visibility is essential for safe pilotage, especially in rain, breaking seas or harbour traffic. A worn, loose or bent wiper arm can leave blind spots at the Helm, reduce the value of lookout aids such as Radar, and indicate strain or failure in the Wiper Motor. Regular checks help prevent loss of visibility when conditions deteriorate.

Marine wiper arms may be straight, adjustable, pantograph or heavy-duty types, matched to the screen size and blade length. Before departure, review PredictWind rain, wind and wave forecasts so you can prepare for spray, squalls and reduced visibility, and inspect wiper arms as part of your deck and wheelhouse readiness checks.
