Color Temperature

January 16, 2025

Color temperature is the warm or cool appearance of a marine light source, measured in Kelvin (K). On boats it applies to cockpit, cabin, deck, engine-room and instrument lighting, influencing how clearly crew can see tasks, displays and surroundings without changing the light’s actual brightness.

Choosing the right colour temperature improves Illumination, reduces glare and helps preserve night vision on watch. Warm white is often preferred in cabins and at the helm after dark, while neutral or cool white can suit deck work, maintenance and galley tasks. It should complement, not distort or overpower, regulated Navigation Lights and efficient LED fixtures.

Colour temperature is closely related to lamp quality, beam spread and colour rendering; a high CRI helps chart symbols, wiring colours and safety markings remain recognisable. When using PredictWind forecasts or routing at night, balanced helm lighting makes screens readable while maintaining awareness outside the cockpit.
