Current
February 27, 2025
A current is the horizontal movement of seawater that carries a vessel over the ground, separate from the boat’s movement through the water. Currents may be driven by tides, wind, pressure differences, ocean circulation, or local geography, and are described by their set (direction) and drift (speed).
For boaters, current affects course over ground, speed made good, fuel use, arrival times, and clearance from hazards. A favourable stream can shorten a passage, while an adverse one can slow progress or create rough seas when opposed by wind. Understanding Tidal Current, Ocean Current, and Wind against Current is essential for safe pilotage and efficient route planning.
Current forecasts are especially important near headlands, harbour entrances, channels, bars, and offshore race areas. PredictWind current data, tidal stream information, and Currents Maps help sailors and power boaters assess timing, optimise routes, and anticipate areas where sea state may become challenging.
