Fluke

January 16, 2025

A fluke is the broad digging blade of an anchor designed to bury in the seabed and create holding power. On fluke anchors, such as Danforth-style designs, two flat flukes pivot from the crown; on other anchors, a single shaped fluke may roll upright and cut into sand, mud or mixed ground.

For boaters, the fluke determines how quickly an Anchor sets, how much load it can resist, and whether it will reset after a wind or tide shift. Fluke size, angle and seabed type should be considered alongside the rest of the Ground Tackle and correct Anchoring Scope.

Before anchoring, check forecast wind shifts, gusts, swell exposure and tidal flow so the fluke remains well buried through changing loads. PredictWind forecasts, wave maps and Tidal Current information help identify sheltered anchorages and decide whether to use more scope, a different anchor, or move before conditions deteriorate.
