Kelvin Count
January 16, 2025
Kelvin Count is the Kelvin (K) rating used to describe the colour temperature of marine lighting, especially LED fittings aboard yachts, powerboats and commercial vessels. A lower count, such as 2700K, appears warm and yellow; a higher count, such as 5000K, appears cooler and whiter.
Choosing the right Kelvin Count improves visibility, comfort and safety on board. Warm light suits cabins and night use because it reduces glare, while cooler light can help in engine rooms, lockers and deck work areas. It should be considered alongside Color Temperature, LED selection and compliant Navigation Lights.
Kelvin Count is not a measure of brightness; brightness is better assessed using lumens and fixture placement. When upgrading boat lighting, balance colour temperature with power draw, waterproofing, corrosion resistance and night vision. For navigation lights, always use approved fittings rather than altering colour with unsuitable bulbs.
