Helm

January 16, 2025

The helm is the steering control and operating position from which a boat is directed. It may be a wheel, tiller, joystick, or integrated steering console, depending on the vessel. When someone is “on the helm”, they are actively controlling the boat’s direction through the steering system.

Good helm control keeps the vessel on its intended Heading, balances the load on the Rudder, and helps maintain comfort and safety in changing wind, waves, and Tidal Current. On sailing boats, the helm also gives feedback on sail trim and balance; on powerboats, it affects tracking, fuel efficiency, and close-quarters manoeuvring.

Before a passage, accurate forecasts and routing help the helm anticipate sea state, gusts, and current changes rather than react late. PredictWind’s forecasts, GRIB data, and Weather Routing support better decisions about course, speed, and timing, reducing fatigue for the person steering and improving overall passage safety.
