kph

February 27, 2025

kph (kilometres per hour) is a metric unit of speed sometimes used in marine forecasts, instrument displays and vessel performance data. In boating, it may describe wind speed, boat speed over ground or the rate of a current, although most nautical navigation still uses knots.

The key for passage planning is unit consistency. A speed in kph must be converted before comparing it with charted distances in nautical miles, routing outputs, or logbook values in Knots. Misreading kph as knots can overestimate conditions or vessel progress, affecting ETA, fuel range, sail choices and safety margins when assessing Wind Speed or running Weather Routing.

In PredictWind, set preferred units consistently across forecasts, routing and onboard displays, especially when switching between coastal and offshore tools such as the Offshore App. For quick conversion, 1 kph equals 0.54 knots; 1 knot equals 1.852 kph.
