Anchor Chain

January 16, 2025

An anchor chain is the length of galvanised or stainless steel chain connecting a vessel’s anchor to the boat, usually as all or part of the rode. Its weight keeps the pull on the anchor low and horizontal, helps absorb shock loads, and resists chafe on rock, coral, or sand.

For boaters, the right chain size, grade, and length are central to secure holding. Too little chain, poor shackles, or inadequate scope can cause dragging in gusts, swell, or reversing tide. Chain works with the Anchor Rode, Anchoring Scope, and Anchor Windlass to set, hold, and recover the anchor safely.

Before choosing an anchorage, check forecast wind shifts, wave exposure, and tidal flow. PredictWind wind, wave, and tidal tools help estimate expected loads on the ground tackle and decide whether to lay more chain, use a snubber, or move to better shelter before conditions deteriorate.
