Interceptors

January 16, 2025

Interceptors are retractable vertical blades fitted along the transom of a powerboat or fast displacement vessel to control running trim. When deployed slightly below the hull, they disturb water flow at the stern, creating lift that lowers the bow and helps the hull ride at a more efficient attitude.

For boaters, correct interceptor use can improve visibility, reduce pounding, shorten time to Planing, and cut Fuel Consumption. They also help balance uneven loading or crosswinds by adjusting port and starboard lift, complementing awareness of Sea State before choosing speed and course.

Interceptors are related to Trim Tabs, but usually react faster and create lift with less drag because only a small blade projects into the flow. PredictWind powerboat planning and wave forecasts can help identify conditions where trim control will matter most for comfort, efficiency, and safe handling.
