Sail Type
February 27, 2025
Sail type describes the category and intended use of a sail carried by a sailing vessel, such as a mainsail, headsail, spinnaker, gennaker or storm sail. It reflects the sail's shape, cloth weight, rigging position and wind range, all of which determine how the boat converts wind into drive and control.
Choosing the right sail type is central to safe, efficient passage making. Sailors match sail area and shape to True Wind Speed, True Wind Angle and expected Sea State; carrying too much sail increases loads and broach risk, while too little reduces speed and manoeuvrability.
Sail type also affects performance modelling and routing. In PredictWind, accurate sail selection and boat data help Weather Routing and AI Polars estimate achievable speeds, preferred angles and likely reefing decisions, supporting more realistic plans for coastal sailing, racing and offshore passages.
