Capstan
January 16, 2025
A capstan is a powered or manual vertical drum fitted on deck to haul or tension rope, line, cable, or chain. Unlike a winch with a self-contained drum, a capstan usually relies on turns of line around the rotating head, allowing crew to control load by friction while tailing the free end.
On recreational and commercial vessels, capstans are used for anchoring, mooring, towing, and handling heavy deck lines. Safe operation depends on keeping hands clear, taking the correct number of turns, and avoiding sudden snatch loads from swell or engine movement. It is closely related to an Anchor Windlass, Rope, and securing points such as a Cleat.
Before relying on a capstan for anchoring or mooring, check the forecast, sea room, and expected wind shifts. PredictWind wind, wave, and Tidal Current tools help crews choose calmer windows for line handling, reducing deck risk and load on equipment.
