This T-shaped piece of metal or wood hardware, often bolted to the deck or mast of a boat, serves its purpose efficiently and quietly which is to secure ropes in a neat and orderly way. 

Cleats are typically found all over the ship, their locations determined by their use. For instance, bow cleats are usually placed on the ship's forward point to secure tow lines. Spring line cleats are situated amidships to secure springs and prevent the boat from moving backward or forward when docked. Stern cleats, on the other hand, are positioned at the stern of the boat to secure stern lines. Some smaller boats may only have cleats amidst ship, depending on their design and purpose.

Interestingly, the term cleats is often heard in American parlance and has a slightly different context. In America, cleats usually refer to a specific type of shoe predominantly worn in sports like soccer, baseball, or football. These shoes have protrusions on the soles, called cleats, that provide the wearer with extra traction on soft or slippery surfaces. The use of the term cleats in this context is quite different from its maritime use, but the principle - providing grip or purchase to prevent slipping - is fundamentally the same.
