Cloudy
February 27, 2025
In a marine forecast, cloudy describes conditions where most or all of the sky is covered by cloud, limiting direct sunlight over the sea. It is usually reported as a sky state or cloud amount and may occur with otherwise light winds, settled pressure, or ahead of a frontal change.
For boaters, cloudy weather can reduce horizon definition, make landfalls and floating hazards harder to see, and signal a higher chance of Rain or Fog. Tracking Cloud Cover alongside wind and pressure helps decide sail choice, watchkeeping, safe speed, and whether to delay a coastal bar crossing or night approach.
In PredictWind forecasts, cloudy conditions are assessed with rain, temperature, wind and model guidance rather than in isolation. Comparing ECMWF, GFS or ICON data in the Forecast or Offshore App helps crews judge whether cloud is merely shading the deck or part of a developing system that may affect route timing.
