Horn

January 16, 2025

A horn is a vessel’s sound-signalling device, used to make loud audible warnings or manoeuvring signals on the water. It may be electric, air-powered, or a portable manual horn, and must be capable of being heard clearly at a practical distance for the vessel’s size and operating area.

For boaters, the horn is essential for collision avoidance when visibility is restricted, traffic is close, or intentions need to be made clear. Sound signals complement visual tools such as Navigation Lights, electronic awareness from AIS, and watchkeeping in Fog. Common uses include alerting another vessel, signalling departure from a berth, or complying with COLREGs in narrow channels and poor visibility.

Before heading out, check that the horn works, is audible from the helm, and has a backup if it relies on power or compressed air. PredictWind forecasts can help anticipate fog, rain, wind, and sea conditions that may increase reliance on sound signals during a passage.
