Knots
February 27, 2025
Knots are the standard maritime unit of speed for vessels, wind and currents. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour, or 1.852 km/h, aligning speed directly with latitude-based navigation and charted distances.
For boaters, knots make passage planning, fuel estimates, sail trim and safety decisions easier to compare. Boat speed in knots, forecast Wind Speed, distance in Nautical Miles and position from GPS all combine to estimate arrival times, lay off hazards and judge whether conditions suit the vessel and crew.
PredictWind displays wind, current and boat speeds in knots across forecasts, GRIB views, tracking and routing tools. In Weather Routing, accurate speed units help calculate realistic routes, departure windows and performance against your boat’s polar or power profile.
