Planing

January 16, 2025

Planing is a high-speed operating mode in which a boat’s hull generates enough hydrodynamic lift to rise partly onto the water’s surface, rather than pushing through it as a displacement vessel. With less wetted surface and drag, the boat can exceed normal hull-speed limits and run faster for a given amount of power.

For boaters, planing affects handling, comfort, fuel use and safety. A boat must be trimmed correctly as it accelerates from Displacement mode, with weight balanced so the Hull lifts cleanly without excessive bow rise or porpoising. Devices such as Trim Tabs help optimise running angle, visibility and efficiency in changing loads and sea conditions.

Planing performance is strongly influenced by wind, waves and current; steep chop can increase slamming and reduce safe speed. PredictWind forecasts, wave maps and power routing help skippers assess whether conditions are suitable for efficient planing, or whether a slower, more conservative passage plan is the safer choice.
