Sea Temp

February 27, 2025

Sea Temp is the sea surface temperature observed or forecast for the water around a vessel, usually representing the upper layer that interacts with wind, waves and air. It is normally shown in Celsius or Fahrenheit and can vary sharply near coasts, fronts, upwellings and major currents.

For boaters, sea temperature helps interpret changing conditions along a route. Temperature breaks can mark an Ocean Current, fish activity or fog potential, while warm water may add moisture and instability to local weather. Read it alongside Sea State and Wind against Current, because these combinations affect comfort, fuel use, passage time and safety.

In PredictWind, sea temperature is available in forecast layers and GRIB data, giving crews context for routing, fishing and offshore decision-making. Sea Temp Maps help compare model guidance with observed patterns and identify useful boundaries before committing to a departure window or a long leg.
