Towing

February 27, 2025

Towing is the controlled pulling of one vessel or floating object by another vessel using a towline, bridle, or specialist towing gear. In boating, it may involve a yacht, powerboat, tender, barge, or disabled craft being moved to safety, through a harbour, or along a planned route.

Safe towing depends on the tow vessel’s power, the condition of the line, attachment points, steering control, and clear communication between crews. A Tug may handle heavy or commercial work, while recreational tows require careful use of VHF Radio and constant awareness of Sea State, traffic, and available sea room.

Before accepting or giving a tow, check wind, waves, visibility, tides, and safe havens. PredictWind forecasts, tidal data, and Weather Routing can help assess whether conditions are suitable, estimate tow duration, and avoid rougher areas that could overload gear or endanger crew.
