GMDSS maps
February 27, 2025
GMDSS maps are maritime planning charts or digital overlays that show Global Maritime Distress and Safety System sea areas and communications coverage. They identify whether a position is typically within VHF DSC range (A1), MF range (A2), satellite coverage (A3) or HF-dependent A4 areas, helping crews understand available distress alerting options.
For boaters, these maps support safer passage planning by matching your route to the right radios, aerials and satellite equipment. Before leaving coastal waters, check coverage against your GMDSS requirements, onboard Marine Radio capability and expected Search And Rescue response arrangements. That helps avoid communication gaps when receiving maritime safety information or sending a distress alert.
PredictWind weather tools do not replace official GMDSS services, but they complement them by helping you choose safer windows and maintain situational awareness offshore. Use forecasts, routing and downloads via the Offshore App alongside your statutory communications plan, especially where Satellite Connectivity is part of the vessel’s safety setup.
