Satellite Connectivity
February 27, 2025
Satellite connectivity is the onboard communications link between a vessel and orbiting satellites, used when mobile coverage or shore-based internet is unavailable. In boating, it supports data, messaging, tracking, weather downloads and, depending on the system, voice communications while coastal cruising or offshore.
For passage planning and safety, satellite connectivity lets skippers update forecasts, send positions and adjust routes far from land. It is especially valuable for Offshore passages, downloading GRIB weather files, and maintaining GPS Tracking for crew, family or race organisers ashore.
With PredictWind, satellite links are commonly used with the Offshore App to request compact forecast data and routing updates at sea. Connected systems such as DataHub can also share onboard position and instrument data, helping crews maintain situational awareness when beyond normal internet range.
