Meters Per Second
February 27, 2025
Meters per second (m/s) is a metric unit used to express speed, most commonly wind speed in marine forecasts and oceanographic data. In boating, it describes how many metres a parcel of air or water moves each second; 1 m/s equals about 1.94 knots, so 10 m/s is roughly 19.4 knots.
For skippers, reading m/s correctly helps translate forecasts into reefing decisions, safe harbour approaches, fuel planning and crew comfort. It is especially useful when comparing international model data with local instruments that may display Wind Speed, Wind Gust or kts in different units.
PredictWind can display forecast wind in your preferred units across maps, tables, GRIB downloads and routing tools, making conversions unnecessary once configured. Understanding m/s is still valuable when reviewing raw GRIB data or sharing forecasts with crew using metric settings.
