GRIB

June 9, 2025

GRIB (Gridded Binary) is a compact data format used to deliver numerical marine weather forecasts. In boating, a GRIB file contains forecast values on a grid, such as wind, waves, pressure, rain and temperature, for specific times and locations along a cruising area or passage.

For skippers, GRIB data turns weather into route decisions: when to leave, which side of a system to sail, how much sea room to allow, and when conditions may exceed crew or vessel limits. It supports Weather Routing, Departure Planning and assessment of Sea State before and during a voyage.

PredictWind uses GRIB data from models such as ECMWF, GFS and ICON, plus high-resolution forecasts where available. The Forecast App and web maps display GRIB layers visually, while the Offshore App lets crews download smaller GRIB files at sea via satellite to conserve bandwidth.
