Port Side
January 16, 2025
Port side is the left-hand side of a vessel when you are facing forward towards the bow. It remains the vessel’s port side regardless of where you are standing or which way you are looking. In navigation, port is associated with the colour red, including the red sidelight shown at night or in restricted visibility.
Clear port and starboard terminology prevents ambiguity during manoeuvres, docking, watchkeeping, and collision avoidance. A helm order, crew instruction, or radio call referring to port must be understood instantly, especially near traffic, marks, or marina berths. Port is always interpreted relative to the vessel’s Bow and opposite the Starboard Side, with visibility and right-of-way cues supported by Navigation Lights.
In PredictWind routes, forecasts and tracking, port side language becomes part of practical seamanship: deciding which side to berth, anticipating wind on approach, and briefing crew before course changes or sail handling. Weather Routing can help plan conditions that make port-side approaches safer.
