Bilge

January 16, 2025

The bilge is the lowest internal part of a boat’s hull, where any water, fuel, oil, or condensation tends to collect. In many vessels it lies beside or above the keel structure, below cabin sole level, and is divided into compartments by frames or bulkheads.

A clean, accessible bilge is central to safety because rising bilge water may indicate a leak, failed hose, blocked cockpit drain, or rainwater ingress. Crews should test the Bilge Pump, inspect the Float Switch, and investigate water near the Hull before it affects stability, electrics, or engine reliability.

Before a passage, heavy Rain, breaking seas, and long periods offshore increase the need for bilge checks and pump readiness. PredictWind forecasts and Offshore App GRIB downloads help crews anticipate conditions that may increase water ingress and schedule inspections accordingly.
