Starlink offers blazing fast internet at an affordable cost if you are using the Mobile Regional plan. However, to get the full picture, consider these points below:
Bill Shock
The GO! exec Unlimited plan offers unlimited access to PredictWind services. Starlink’s Mobile Priority Plan at 50GB/month, make overages and bill shock highly likely. The average family of 4, in the US, consumes 749.8 GB per month. With Netflix using 3GB/hour, and Instagram; 600MB per hour, data usage can quickly get out control.
Coverage Limitations
The Starlink Mobile Regional plan with the standard antenna cannot be used whilst in motion. With coastal coverage, you can only rely on this service whilst at anchor. However the Mobile Regional plan is the cheapest Starlink plan suitable for a boat, at a cost of US$150 per month.
Emergency Situations
In an emergency you cannot take a Starlink device onto a liferaft, or ashore, nor does Starlink have an SOS button to connect you directly to GEOS emergency services.
Lightning Protection
In a thunderstorm event you can disconnect and store the GO! in a microwave (it acts like faraday cage) to protect your essential weather and communication device.
Voice Communication
Starlink does not have a dedicated voice line for emergency use. Having this in a boat or during an emergency is essential, and not available on other devices like the Garmin Inreach. Many countries marine safety regulations specify you must have a satellite phone such as the GO!, as an emergency safety device.
Backup Power Supply
The GO! has an internal battery so in the event of a power failure (such as an invertor failure) on the boat, the unit can be switched on for short periods of time to get essential weather and communications for the remainder of your passage. The battery gives you 6 hours of talk/data time or 24 hours of standby time.
Power Usage
The higher power requirements of Starlink for GPS tracking, auto-polar updates and the PredictWind Anchor Alert App can be a significant power draw on your batteries when using these monitoring services 24hrs a day.
Weather Proofing
The GO! is a rugged unit with an IP65 rating designed for the marine environment.
Conclusion
Our recommendation is to use the Starlink Mobile Regional plan with a standard antenna when at anchor, and use the Iridium GO! exec on passage.
Why? For most yachts, the Starlink flat high performance antenna, which is necessary for in motion use, requires too much power for the average yacht. Services such as GPS tracking require Starlink to be switched on 24hrs a day, which leads to high power usage. By comparison, the Starlink standard antenna is almost half the size and power requirement of the high performance antenna.
The GO! exec gives you peace of mind when heading offshore, with a portable unit that can be used in a life raft, full voice capability, and an SOS button to keep you safe, anywhere in the world.
