Cable Run

January 16, 2025

A cable run is the planned route taken by electrical, data, antenna or control cables through a boat, from a power source or device to panels, sensors, radios, lights or onboard electronics. In a marine installation it includes the physical path, supports, glands, conduits, drip loops and protection needed to keep wiring secure, dry and serviceable.

Good cable runs improve safety and reliability by keeping wiring away from heat, sharp edges, bilges and moving gear, while separating high-current circuits from data or radio cables to reduce interference. Correct routing also supports the right Wire Gauge, dependable Shore Power connections and fault-free Navigation Lights.

When adding instruments, satellite equipment or NMEA networks, document each cable run and leave access for inspection, fusing and future upgrades. PredictWind systems such as DataHub benefit from tidy, labelled runs between GPS, AIS, sensors and internet devices, helping maintain clean data and dependable onboard connectivity.
