Fahrenheit

February 27, 2025

Fahrenheit (°F) is a temperature scale used in some marine forecasts, instruments, and onboard displays, especially on US-registered vessels and in US waters. In a boating context it expresses air temperature, sea temperature, cabin temperature, engine-room readings, and other weather or vessel conditions that affect comfort and safety.

Boaters need to recognise Fahrenheit when comparing forecasts, logbook data, and equipment alarms that may use different units. Misreading a forecast can affect clothing, watchkeeping, refrigeration, heat stress management, and route choices. It is commonly compared with Celsius, general Temperature, and Sea Temp when assessing conditions before departure.

In PredictWind, temperature layers and forecast tables help crews see expected warmth or cold along a passage, while unit settings allow forecasts to match the skipper’s preference. When downloading forecasts offshore, confirm whether values are shown in Fahrenheit or Celsius so the whole crew interprets the data consistently.
