Kayaking
February 27, 2025
Kayaking is the operation of a small, narrow paddle craft in marine or inland waters, typically propelled with a double-bladed paddle. In a boating context it includes sea kayaking, harbour transits, shore access from anchored vessels, and close-coast exploration where exposure to weather, tide, and traffic matters.
For boaters, kayaking requires the same planning discipline as any small craft passage. Low freeboard and limited speed make kayaks sensitive to Wind Speed, Sea State, and Tidal Current. Safe trips depend on choosing sheltered launch points, avoiding wind-against-tide conditions, carrying communication and flotation gear, and allowing for fatigue on the return leg.
PredictWind forecasts help kayakers and support vessels assess short weather windows using wind, wave, rain, temperature, and tide information before launching. High-resolution coastal forecasts are especially useful around headlands, channels, and bays where conditions can change quickly despite apparently settled weather.
