Table Pedestal

January 16, 2025

A table pedestal is the central post or leg that supports a boat’s tabletop, usually bolted to the cabin sole, cockpit sole, or deck with a fixed, removable, or height-adjustable base. It lets a dining, chart or work table be installed in tight spaces and may lower to form part of a berth on cruising yachts and powerboats.

A well-fitted pedestal improves safety and usability by keeping the table stable when the vessel heels, accelerates, or rolls. Locking collars, strong backing plates, corrosion-resistant materials and rounded edges reduce the risk of injury or damage, especially near the Galley or Salon. In a lively Sea State, a loose pedestal can become a hazard and should be secured or removed before departure.

Related hardware includes deck sockets, removable bases, gas-lift pedestals and drop-leaf tabletops. Before a passage, crews should check fasteners and clear walkways; PredictWind wind and Wave Height forecasts help decide when to lower or stow cabin furniture for comfort and safety.
