Catamaran
January 16, 2025
A catamaran is a multihull vessel with two parallel hulls joined by a deck or bridging structure. In sailing and power boating, this twin-hull design gives a wide platform, reduced heeling, generous accommodation, and often a shallower draught than a comparable monohull.
For boaters, a catamaran’s wide Beam improves initial stability and deck space, while shallow Draught can open up anchorages and reef passages. However, the same width affects marina berths and manoeuvring, and heavy loading or breaking seas can increase structural stress and Capsize risk, so route choice and sea-state awareness matter.
Catamarans respond differently to wind angle, wave period, and payload, making accurate performance assumptions important for passages. PredictWind Weather Routing, forecasts, and polars can help skippers compare departure windows, avoid uncomfortable beam seas, and optimise speed, comfort, and safety offshore.
